| Any more news? |
| I read this website with great interest and hope that all is well with you. A note on what you are upto next would be great. Are you still hiking etc? A 70lb pack in the mountains in winter with limited experience is crazy but you now have the experience and I hope a cheaper packweight. Running a marathon before you try the AT again might knock you into shape. I have been to the Appalachians a few times and love them. I look forward to seeing them again but it's not so easy when you live in England. Any thoughts? |

| I like your site a lot |
| Hi cowboy,
Just pointed here by someone at whiteblazenet saying there's a fool here walking AT with a laptop. I was wondering did you actually update your journal at the trail by mobile communication or did you link it at public computers ? How did it work ?
I myself want to make a big hike with a PDA,cell phone and solarpanel one day trying to keep my journal updated with articles and photo's.
I really like the design and the content of your website. The map at the frontpage is great. I myself want to make something like that also. It would be even greater if people good see your actual walked route and position online.
I just started the framework for my own website, I hope it ones turns out to be such a pretty journal like yours.
Hope you will be back on AT soon.
Happy hiking to you.

| My dad has been interested in hiking this trail all his life and was tracking your progress. You were right to listen to your instincts. What a great accomplishment! |

| what's your status? |
| Mike,
Please don't post this. Just want to communicate the following.
I finally got to website today( 4Apr05). Been busy flying all over. I am still on active duty until Jan 06.
It seems you are back home for now. If you are considering trying again next spring, I"ll be happy to hike any part of the AT with you.
Best, Al

| Another Louisiana Thruhiker |
| Locate Darren "Mudbug" Domas. He is from Baton Rouge and thruhiked the AT in '97 & '00. I think he lives in Clayton GA now. He is extremely knowledgable and helpful to hikers. He may be in BR for the holidays. I'll see if I can contact him about your first attempt. Don't give up. There is still a chance to hike this season. Darren can help you lighten your pack. |

| Where you AT? |
| Mike, I hope you're doing well, and moving slowly up the trail. Remember what I told you... There is a big difference between needs & wants. I hope you'll lighten your load so you can enjoy your hike.
Rock on!

| get ready to walk again. |
| I walked the first 90 miles in 7 days 4 years ago. it kick my big butt, but I will walk it again. My pack was to heavy also. You do not need but 3 days of food and your pack needs to be no more than 30lb the first 200 miles. I am in training again to walk in the next 2 year maybe all or maybe one state at the time but once its in your blood to walk you will walk it. good luck cowboy. |

| What If..... ? |
| Mike - I wrote this 6 years ago for someone who thought they had "failed" by not completing the AT - http://trailwise.circumtech.com/atlthruhikingwhatif
You might also check out the Thruhiking Papers - they're old (1996), but they're also being updated even as we speak -
http://trailwise.circumtech.com/thruhikingpapers/default
And yes - I've thruhiked the AT. You can too - if you REALLY want it. Call me if you want to, I'll be happy to talk "trail" with you. |

| You get what you pay for. Spend some Money. |
| Keep "some" electronics but ditch the extra batteries. Use a solar powered pad (Brunton SolarRoll 14). Also, ditch the log and try a trailstick from: www.luxurylite.com (4 oz).

| Packweight |
| Looks like you hit a bad patch of weather. Don't get discouraged, just cut some packweight and get back out there - you have a lot of room to get your weight down; that will make the hiking a lot more enjoyable.
You could probably lose most of your electronics (especially iPod, Laptop and GPS), some of your extra clothes, and a lot of little extras and get your weight down to a more reasonable 40 lbs. |

| Your next adventure???? |
| Mike, I knew you would do great things! Anyone who can pass an orange to someone, using only your neck, on a very hot day in Charenton, is bound for GREATNESS!!!! Hope to see you soon! Annette Billet |

| Good Luck!!!! |
| I teach 4th grade at Our Lady of Fatima in Lafayette. We had just read about the Appalachian Trail when the article came out in the Daily Advertiser. We are following your adventure as part of our Social Studies class. We all wish you good luck and may God bless you on your journey.
Sincerely,

| Don't Quit! |
| Mike, You have a great gift for writeing and a wonderful web site. I enjoyed it a lot. Why don't you do some research and lighten your pack to 30 lbs or less and start late March or April when the weather will be better. I will be starting mid March and hope to get further then you did but I think you should just start over and still go for it. |

| TIME FOR A U-TURN |
| Lucky Cowboy,
You just started too early and had a revealing trial run. Dump everything not necessary for survival out of that pack and return to the trail. You have plenty of time. Get a Cho-Pat brace for the knee, and hop that train. BTW, many hikers have had to go off trail this year. They are just biding their time until this bunch of storms pass. March 18 is a magic day to begin a thru. |
| -- Kinnickinic--Sawnie Robertson | March 04, 2005 |
|
| Failure? Nah! |
| Stopping a hike is not failure. Often it is prudent and self preservation. I'm sorry you missed Justus Creek where I spent two nights with knee problems last year. Pare your pack and start again. |
| -- Skylander Jack | March 04, 2005 |
|
| Getting back on the trail |
| Re-evaluate all your gear. Drop your pack weight by 50-60%. Lots of trail lists online with experienced folks will help you do this. Search for AT-L or Whiteblaze. Then, go for it again! |
| -- Swallowtail Butterfly | March 04, 2005 |
|
| Pack Weight |
| Your packweight is way out of line. When you get it down to 20 lbs, including food and water, try the trail again. You'll be MUCH happier. Your basic items should weigh in at under 10 lbs. Those are pack, tent, sleeping bag, pad, stove. Dried food should weigh 1.5 to 2 lbs. per day, so 4 days worth would be 6 to 8 lbs. Water weighs roughly 8 lbs. per gallon. Fill in the rest with clothes, personal items, whatever. |
| -- Leslie Booher | March 04, 2005 |
|
| Failure is not trying.....remember that |
| Mike,
This was a learning experience. There is no failure. Can you begin again in a week or two? Or in a month? Weather has to be better by April.

| Grannys Angel |
| Well I am happy you are ok. I worried about you all night. James and I watched the weather and just prayed you made it through the night. I think Mr. Jones was your angel from heaven. Granny is now up there and she worried here on earth, but now she was in control. So, Granny was with you all this time. She sent Mr. Jones to you to comfort you and help you get through this. Wow we lost a wonderful grandmother, but she sent you an angel from above. I am still proud of you and glad your coming home. Thanks Mr. Jones if you are reading this. |

| reassess |
| Time to reassess not stop. Take a week and let the weather break. Go out and buy a knee brace and a pair of hiking poles-ditch the bear! And for God's sake lighten that pack!!!!!70lbs are you high on gumbo? 45lbs the max. You have the time and money to do this please don't lose this chance.
God bless |
